Kate Moss's off/on boyfriend, Pete Doherty treated for manic depression.
March 3, 2006
Wayward rocker Pete Doherty has been diagnosed with manic depression and is receiving treatment for the condition. The Babyshambles frontman, who was arrested on suspicion of stealing a car and possessing hard drugs on Monday, makes regular visits to London's Homerton Hospital, which specializes in mental health and addiction problems, writes British newspaper The Sun.
An insider tells the publication: "He is being given counseling and anti-depressants. He believes this is the way forward."
Doherty, who previously romanced supermodel Kate Moss, was slapped with 13 nights in prison in January and ordered to attend a rehabilitation program following conviction on seven drug counts last month. At that hearing, the judge warned he could face further time behind bars should he break his community service order.
That said, according to a report by Reuters, Pete was stopped with two younger men in central Birmingham on Monday evening by police investigating reports of a car being stolen in London. The three passengers of the car were arrested, but later released on bail. Doherty just escaped a jail sentence earlier this month over seven separate drug-related charges after pleading guilty to possessing the class A drugs heroin and cocaine. He was told he faced a prison sentence if he failed to comply with a community service order which requires him to attend a drug rehabilitation centre.
He has to return to court on March 8 for a review of the order. . . . a West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "Three men were arrested yesterday when a car was stopped in Colmore Row in Birmingham at approximately 9:15 p.m. last night. They were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, relating to a report of a car stolen in London. They were also arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs. One of the men is aged 26 and from London. The other two are aged 18 and 19, from Dundee. They have all been released on police bail pending further inquiries." It remains to be seen what the court will say of this little “adventure”, but it’s clear that if he keeps it up like this, Doherty will really end up in shambles. Not Babyshambles though.

The second of three children born to a strict, Irish-born army Major and his a Liverpudlian wife, Pete Doherty spent most of his childhood moving about the UK and Europe as a result of his father's assignments. At the age of 17 he moved away from his family to live with his grandmother in North London -- an environment he preferred to any of the other places in the world he had lived. Pete excelled as a student, achieving top grades and taking the top prize in a poetry competition; this ultimately earned him admission to Oxford University to study English (some sources state it was the University of London), but after his first year he dropped out and moved into a London flat with friend Carl Barât. The two struck up a songwriting partnership, and eventually began performing as an acoustic duo in pubs around 1996. Other musicians moved in and out of the line-up over the next few years, but by 2001 the punk band now known as The Libertines settled into a fixed quartet with drummer Gary Powell and bassist John Hassall.
In 2002 the band signed to the Rough Trade label, and their debut single What A Waster appeared shortly afterwards, its punk-revivalist approach causing a considerable stir in the music press. Their first full-length effort, the Mick Jones produced Up The Bracket, was released later in the year and received a similarly enthusiastic reception, with comparisons to pioneering punk acts like the Buzzcocks, The Clash and The Sex Pistols being frequently bandied about. Similarities to the latter extended far beyond just the music, in fact: by this time Doherty had whole-heartedly embraced the self-destructive, chemically-drenched lifestyle of the Pistols' Sid Vicious, and seemed to be as dedicated in his intention to send himself to an early grave. With the release of Bracket in the States in early 2003 and the band's appearance at the Coachella Festival, their popularity began to spread across the Atlantic, but by June the situation between Doherty and the rest of The Libertines had degenerated considerably. The troublesome frontman failed to turn up for a scheduled European tour and was expelled from the band as a result.
Doherty's problems with drug addiction and the erratic nature of his behavior only continued to worsen, and not long afterwards he was arrested for burglarizing Carl Barât's apartment while his old bandmate was away on tour. While being given a few months to unwind in prison he managed to patch things up with Barât, and upon his release was welcomed back into the line-up of the Libertines. The reunion -- not surprisingly -- proved short-lived, and after a handful of (sometimes disastrous) shows around the UK and some very difficult sessions for a second album (The Libertines, released in August 2004), Doherty was again expelled from the band until he could overcome his drug problems. A pair of failed attempts at rehab were followed by his placement in a Thai monastery specializing in addiction reform; this attempt failed as well, as Doherty chose to flee back to London rather than persevere.
With the Libertines now keeping active without him, their former frontman created a new musical outlet for himself called Babyshambles -- his motivation apparently being the need to raise money for drugs. His troubles with the law were far from over, and in the summer of 2004 he was charged with possession of a switchblade in his car, followed by several drug and assault charges in 2005. At first, Babyshambles managed to become a going concern despite these entanglements, but the disruption or abrupt cancellation of several important engagements in mid-2005 (including a support slot for Oasis and an appearance at Live 8 in July, an performance at an Oslo festival in August, and sold-out show at Shrewsbury Music Hall in October) have served to reinforce Doherty's reputation for unreliability.

Moss and Doherty are back on . . .
March 2, 2006
Just when you thought it was all over, the KATE MOSS and PETE DOHERTY on-off saga is back. The supermodel has reportedly made a last ditch attempt to revive her relationship with Pete by offering him a way out of drugs.
A source told Reveal magazine: "She is desperate for him to clean up his act so they can give their relationship one last go. "Kate hopes he can come to his senses and take up the offer."
But the first signs don't look good - earlier this week the Babyshambles frontman was arrested on suspicion of stealing a car and being in possession of Class A drugs.

Supermodel Kate Moss was "discovered" at 14 by Sarah Doukas of the Storm Modeling Agency, while she was passing through JFK International Airport on vacation with her parents. She has high cheekbones, no body fat, and might be considered pretty when she smiles. Through the 1990's and early '00s, she was one of the world's most recognizable models.
Moss starred in a series of Calvin Klein ads through the 1990's, spurring a period of waify "heroin chic" in the modeling world, which emphasized emaciation and de-emphasized breasts. Moss was photographed with utterly blank face, as if she were stoned or exhausted. Klein reported paid her £1 million a year, until her contract was not renewed in 1999, "by mutual agreement."
Also in 1999, Moss said publicly that she had never walked any fashion catwalk sober, "even at ten in the morning." She is a member of both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. "I kind of lost the plot a little bit there really. I wasn't very happy at all. I don't think alcohol can make you happy."
Moss is 5-foot-7 and weighs an estimated 100 pounds, perhaps a few pounds less, though she says she never weighs herself. In 1998, she was hospitalized for exhaustion, and her people dismissed all rumors that "exhaustion" was a code word for heroin addiction. In 2000, she was hospitalized with a kidney infection. In 2003, she was hospitalized with a sleeping disorder. She is a vegetarian, and smokes upwards of 80 cigarettes daily.
She gets around. Moss has been romantically linked to actor Johnny Depp, artist Jake Chapman, actor Billy Zane, actor Leonardo DiCaprio, Lemonhead Evan Dando, photographer Mario Sorrenti, Spacehog guitarist Antony Langdon, Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood's son Jesse, and publisher Jefferson Hack, who is reportedly the father of Moss's daughter.
To celebrate her 21st birthday, Moss "wrote" Kate, a collection of photos of Moss with a brief introduction by Moss. It retails at $45, hardcover only. Moss has appeared as herself in French and Saunders, the sketch comedy precursor to Absolutely Fabulous, and wants to be a movie star.
Kate to debut in lesbian role
She has also been approached by 'Brokeback Mountain' director Ang Lee to play a lesbian in his new film, according to reports. Lee is to direct a film based on the life of legendary 60s soul singer Dusty Springfield with a yet-to-be-confirmed 'North Country' star Charlize Theron in the leading role. Moss is expected to play a beautiful socialite who was one of Springfield's early lovers and broke her heart. The film will follow the English singer's life from her birth in North London, through her success and comebacks, to her death from breast cancer in 1999. A source said: "Kate's the ideal choice to play the love of Dusty's early life. She's beautiful, aloof and she epitomizes swinging London."
Kate signs 8 new contracts including a £1.5 million with Calvin Klein . . .
According to her publicist Max Clifford, Kate is set to sign a £1.5m deal this week with Calvin Klein, almost doubling her post-cocaine scandal salary to £9m! This comes on the heals of a boosted campaign for Rimmel. The TV and poster push features Moss out on the town again. After a night of hard partying, she is ready to go again after applying a little Rimmel glow anti-fatigue effect foundation. The new deals will boost her earnings to around £9m a year. Before the tabloid cocaine scandal broke, Moss earned around £5m a year with Rimmel London, H&M, Chanel and Burberry to front campaigns.
After pictures of Moss snorting the Class A drug appeared in the Daily Mirror, she lost three of her lucrative contracts, but has since battled back to secure an extra eight contracts, including a £1.2m Virgin deal and £1m Stella McCartney contract. Moss was also named the Best Dressed Woman of 2005 by Grazia magazine and is back on the cover of Vogue magazine this month. Separately, the Croydon-born supermodel is due to hear this week whether she faces drugs charges over the tabloid pictures of her snorting cocaine. According to reports Kate is now much better off then she was before her cocaine scandal. And with new campaigns from Virgin, Longchamps and Bulgari on the horizon Moss is a good few million richer then she was last year. According to the Sun, she earned £5.75million in 2005 in 2006 she is set to earn a massive £9.4million this year. Not bad for a skinny girl from Croydon…
