Natural ways to take the burn out of heartburn
Ever notice the multitude of products aimed at middle-aged people
suffering from heartburn?
This painful problem becomes incredibly common as we grow older.
More than half of all people over
40 regularly endure heartburn's torment, sometimes after meals.
As a result, various types of antacids have become extremely
popular, pulling in big profits for drug companies. But the sad truth is
these are not always the best thing for heartburn and in some cases
they can actually prolong the problem.
The burning sensation we call heartburn happens when strong
stomach acids "reflux" or move up from the stomach into the
esophagus, injuring the tissue and causing pain.
Because the pain of heartburn is in the esophagus, antacids are no
help. They neutralize the acid in the stomach, not the esophagus,
where the pain is. Your body simply secretes more stomach acid,
which, in a vicious cycle, leads to more heartburn.
Happily, alternative physicians have found that key changes in eating
style, diet and some simple nutritional supplements can bring huge
benefits to heartburn sufferers because they get to the root of the
problem.
CHANGE HOW YOU EAT
Eat more whole grains, vegetables, and fruit and avoid the foods that
give you heartburn- usually fatty foods and drinks containing caffeine.
These are called " flag foods." They promote excess stomach acid and
weaken or relax the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve that is
supposed to block stomach acid from coming up into the esophagus.
CHANGE WHEN YOU EAT
Do not eat within two hours of bedtime and never lie flat after a meal.
Lying down raises your stomach, making it easier for stomach acid to
flow into the esophagus. Wait until your stomach is less full.
If you must rest, put some pillows under your back and shoulders, to
keep them well above your stomach.
NATURAL PREVENTIVE SUPPLEMENTS
Take one or more of these daily to reduce the occurrence of
heartburn.

* Digestive supplements, papaine or betaine: two capsules twice
a day.
* Ginger: 500 mg. after meals daily
* Magnesium: 200 mg. daily

50 with sugar-free ginger ale. Sip often throughout the day.
