What Is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)?

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a medical condition that affects millions of women. It causes severe changes in mood and body that can get in the way of day-to-day living. The symptoms of PMDD start a week or two before a woman gets her period and may last up to a few days after her period starts. Any woman who has a monthly period can have PMDD. It can get worse with age, but it goes away when a woman stops having periods.

PMDD isn't just part of "being a woman." It's a real medical condition, and it causes real suffering. PMDD is much more serious than premenstrual syndrome (PMS). If you have PMDD, learning more about it can be the first step toward feeling better and getting control of your life again.
